DETROIT -- Victor Martinez will meet the Detroit Tigers in New York this weekend.Whether the 36-year-old designated hitter will play in a game this weekend remains to be seen.Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Tuesday that Martinez will play the next two games with the Toledo Mud Hens in Syracuse before being re-evaluated.On a rehab assignment with Toledo, Martinez will not return with the Mud Hens on Thursday for their opener against Triple-A Norfolk. Instead, he will remain in New York and meet the team for the start of their series opener against the Yankees."Whether he's activated or not, that's an issue we'll have to see how he feels," Ausmus said, "if he feels like he's ready."If he reports no discomfort, there's a good chance Martinez, sidelined with inflammation in his left knee since May 19, could be activated this weekend.Based on how well Martinez has performed on his assignment, all signs suggest he's healthy and nearing a return. Ausmus was not willing to announce whether Martinez will be activated, saying there remain obstacles that he must cross.Martinez went 2 for 4 with an RBI in his second game with the Mud Hens on Monday. All four at-bats came from the left side of the plate.
